The advanced 100/40Gbit Bypass solution addresses the need for creating fail-safe operation of inline network appliances in high-bandwidth 40Gbps and 100Gbps links. The new Bypass utilizes heartbeat packets generated and detected on the network interfaces to identify an interruption in the link. If an interruption is detected the Bypass Switch bypasses the attached hardware device, effectively removing the interruption from the link. This also has the benefit of allowing the attached device to be serviced with minimal downtime of the link. The device supports up to two 100G Bypass segments in a 1U chassis.
The Bypass offers trouble free access ports to support inline network security and monitoring devices. As mentioned previously the demand for higher bandwidth in the network can easily exceed the capabilities of these mission-critical devices, especially in migrating to 100Gbps speeds. The advanced Bypass Switch also supports Layer 3 load-balancing to spread the workload across multiple devices or interfaces, allowing slower devices to remain relevant for longer. Additionally, the new Bypass can also function as a media converter and/or amplifier.
The Bypass achieves increased reliability on critical network links, featuring high-speed optical switching with minimal insertion loss. Other advantages include fail-safe inline protection as it allows the in-line appliance to be removed or serviced without impacting network traffic. To this end the Bypass safeguards the network against unanticipated downtime.
